Welcome to WirelessWalkley.net

WirelessWalkley.net is a not for profit community project, offering fixed and mobile wireless broadband access within the Sheffield area.

If you found this website, it's probably because you stumbled across one of our access points in Sheffield, or someone like Ian or Kevin told you about the project.

If you are an existing member, you can login on this page and start using the service right away.

If you are not registered, you can do so for free here. However, please note that access at this time is not instantanious and registering will not automatically allow a connection onto the service (but we are working on it!).

Our coverage map as of July 2005 - Yellow represents areas where a connection should be possible.

Despite our name we are aiming to provide coverage right across Sheffield. To achieve that, we need more people running access points. Find out how you can help here.

If you would like to get involved and have any questions, please register and get in touch via the forum.

Alternatively, you can email us at ian@ianwild.com or kev@oddworld.name.

More details about our service can be found in the WirelessWalkley FAQ

Dulo is here, and so is Openwrt
News about WirelessWalkley We've been quietly running the AP at Dulo now for a few months - We even have regulars (Hello!).

This week, rather than rely on Star-OS for the management of the wireless link back to Heeley AND the internal connectivity in the pub, we implemented an Open-WRT box. This has improved coverage and performance greatly. Which is good.

If you see Ian or Kev in Dulo, feel free to buy us beer. Other than that, access is completly free, and we have no plans to change that!

Upwards and onwards we go...................

Dulo
News about WirelessWalkley kev writes "Today I installed at Dulo. No hotspot as yet but that'll have to wait for now. Tested okay at first but then ran in to some access point issues which myself and Ian are working on as I write this. Better get back to it....."

WirelessWalkley Website Downtime
News about WirelessWalkley Unfortunately today, the Wirelesswalkley.net website and our Heeley access point suffered around 6 hours of downtime. This was the first downtime ever experienced on the primary connection, and it highlighted a serious issue with our redundancy plans. This is a drawback for us, as we have only this week completed the new website and had started to mount up our publicity activities already. The problem was due to an issue with the Upstream bandwidth provider (Telewest) and it apparenty affected a large part of the Telewest network in Sheffield this morning.

We will now be working hard to introduce dual resiliance (Via wireless of course) at our sites just as quickly as we can. In the mean time we would ask all of our users and visitors to accept our apologies and to rest assured that we are taking this matter seriously. Wirelesswalkley is a voluntary project which recievies no funding. Maintaintaining the service with 100% uptime will always be hard, especially when we can't throw money at a problem like this...

Fingers crossed, we shall however achieve another period of solid uptime on the primary connection...

With Regards,

Ian

WirelessWalkley.net Website Takes Shape
News about WirelessWalkley Today saw another step forward for the new Wirelesswalkley.net website. We now have a fully functional CMS, forums and lots of other bells and whistles. There is still plenty planned and plenty of hard work to do, but the progress we are making is excellent.

If you would like to offer any sort of assistance, please do get in touch with Ian or Kev...
